and Everyday Acts of Kindness
by Dr. Ming Chee
I’m on Day 18 of my 30-day challenge of giving, and I’ve learned something amazing—opportunities for kindness are everywhere. They aren’t always grand gestures but often show up in the small moments of everyday life. These small moments of kindness carry so much power.
Through this challenge, I’ve become more aware of the kindness around me. It’s made me see how giving is not just about what I offer, but also about what I receive in return.
An Unexpected Gift
Just today, I had a beautiful experience that reminded me of this truth. Someone in my apartment building found a package for Joely that had been misplaced. I had no idea it was lost, but this kind neighbor brought the package down to the mailroom.
I don’t even know who did it, but the fact that they went out of their way to make sure Joely’s package was returned made me feel so grateful. To show my appreciation, I posted a thank you in our building’s Facebook group, hoping the person who returned it would see.
This small act of kindness reminded me that examples of giving are all around us. Even when it’s something as simple as returning a package, these moments have a powerful effect.
Kindness in Small Gestures
One lesson I’ve learned from my 30-day challenge is that giving doesn’t always need to be big or elaborate. Sometimes, the simplest acts can have the biggest impact.
It could be holding a door open, smiling at a stranger, or listening to someone who needs to talk. Small gestures, like the one my neighbor made, create ripples of kindness that extend far beyond that moment.
The Ripple Effect of Kindness
Every time we give, we create a ripple effect that touches the people around us. My challenge has taught me that the more I give, the more I’m open to receiving. This doesn’t always mean receiving material things—it can be the joy of making someone’s day better or the peace that comes from being present in the moment.
As I continue this journey, I’m learning to keep my eyes open for small opportunities to give. These moments are everywhere, waiting to be noticed.
Join Me on the Journey of Giving
I invite you to join me in this journey. You don’t have to take on a 30-day challenge, but you can start by finding just one opportunity each day to offer something of yourself. It could be your time, a kind word, or a small favor.
Take a moment today to think about how kindness has shown up in your life recently. You may be surprised by how much of an impact those small acts are having.
Remember, giving is powerful. And it’s often the smallest, most thoughtful gestures that leave the greatest impact.
