I reviewed The Art Of Abundance – Ten Rules to a Prosperous Life by Dennis Merrit Jones for Good Vibe University this month. Great reference book.
I wanted to share the fish parable because I loved it so much. I’m going to paraphrase it but if you want it word for word you can see it in the book.
There is a school of fish in a secluded lagoon, every fish would be born and die there fearing to go too far because of the safety of the reef. They attended school knowing they wool have to decide to follow the call of the deep.
The final exam was two fold:
- Discover the secret to life – which is a life of wholeness , abundance , to thrive.
- Determine how you will use what you discover to create a life of fulfillment and purpose then you shall transcend the confines of the lagoon and find a bliss beyond anything you have ever known.
What you are looking for you are looking with .
The secret is hidden in the infinite ocean a place never ventured before.
All the fish swam as one body further away and got more tentative – away from safety & comfort- the more frightened they became. Legends lingered in their little fish minds – ocean seemed to go on forever – they began to say its scary out here all alone , we’ll never find it. Out of their collective fear of the unknown – they gave up as one body and turned and went back to the shallow warm familiar lagoon.
All but one named Angel.
Angel felt compelled to more forward. She was being called by the infinite Ocean not giving into fear.
Back in the lagoon months had passed. Many believed Angel had become victim to frightful stories.
One day Angel returned. There was a soft radiant glow . The Master said ah brave one what have you learned about the secret to life. Angel said it became my mantra – what I am looking for I am looking with. While drifting with the current I realized how comfortable I felt as if I had been born in the current . I know the secret to life. its my oneness with the infinite ocean. I am swimming in it and so are all of you. its all about FREEDOM.
Because we are one with the water that is present everywhere we can use it to go anywhere to do anything we desire- in the water is everything we need. Not just to sustain but to thrive and grow. And more than enough for every fish in the sea.
Angel with peace and confidence swam back to the vast unknown trusting and knowing anything would be possible if she just kept the faith in her oneness with the water that sustained her and in the wisdom within that guided her to what was hers to do.
Beautiful story isn’t it. May we all find the secret to life 🙂
